2024

  • We have added a new page to the website: The History of Cleeve Wood Road Shops. With thanks to those who have helped make this happen.
  • An emergency use bleed kit has been installed by the defibrillator, on the wall outside Cleeve Wood Pharmacy.
  • The weeds and greenery at the font of Cleeve Wood Road shops will be professionally cleared and tidied in an effort to keep the area smart. This will be funded by the Cleeve Wood Road Shops Regeneration Group.
  • The Downend Easter Egg Trail will return for 2024, please visit social media for updates.
  • Litter picking has taken place throughout Cleeve Wood Road shops, as well as a relocation of a public bin to a more convenient location.

2023

  • Thank you to Above Horizon Photography who have provided us with some aerial / drone photography of the shopfronts. These can currently be seen on our homepage and regeneration group pages as well as our Facebook page.
  • With thanks to West 70 Photography who have provided some new shopfront images of the businesses listed on our shops and services page.
  • Cleeve Wood Road Shops Regeneration Group are looking into having some maintenance carried out on the trees surrounding Cleeve Wood Road Shops.
  • A number of the businesses at Cleeve Wood Road Shops are taking part in the Downend Easter Egg Trail organised by South Glos High Steet Team. The map and more information can be found on our Facebook page.
  • Cleeve Wood Road Shops Regeneration Group have self funded the repair of a third part of the wall that has collapsed along the front of Cleeve Wood Road Shops. This work was carried out and completed shortly after the other wall repairs. This portion of the work was entirely funded
  • The wall that runs along the front of the rank of shops in Cleeve Wood has now been repaired. With thanks to South Gloucestershire Council and to the stonemason for their help / hard work in getting this completed.
  • Litter picking continues around the Cleeve Wood Road Shops area. Thanks to those who help keep the area tidy.
  • The wall that runs along the front of the rank of shops in Cleeve Wood is going to have sections of it repaired. This is made possible by a grant from South Gloucestershire council.
  • Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road Shops raised an amazing £2500 for our three chosen charities. Cheques were presented to the three local causes in January 2023. 

2022

  • Downend in Bloom have updated the floral planters for the winter. We thank them for their work in the area.
  • Cleeve Wood will for the first time this year have it’s own Christmas tree. This is made possible through the support of the local parish council and South Gloucestershire council. The tree lights will be switched on during the Christmas event on 27th November.
  • Cleeve Wood Road Shops is glad to now be a part of the “Downend Partnership” meetings which are meetings between South Gloucestershire council’s high streets team, the local parish council and local business owners.

  • Land in and around the front of the shops has been cleared and will continue to be maintained by some of the business owners within the rank of shops.

2021

  • Thank you for everyone’s continued support of the businesses at Cleeve Wood Road Shops through what has been another challenging year. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season ahead.
  • As rules regarding COVID-19 change we continue to recommend contacting businesses at Cleeve Wood Road shops directly with any enquiries.
  • Due to the uncertain nature of the pandemic the difficult decision has been made to postpone the Christmas event until 2022.
  • A decision on proceeding with Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road Shops 2021 will be made in due course and updates will be shared here.
  • New security lighting will be installed in the rear alleyway of the shops during the summer. These solar lights will help light the alleyway and provide better security. This work was carried out due to the kind contributions of the businesses in Cleeve Wood who support the regeneration group through monthly donations.
  • The land opposite Cleeve Wood Road Shops has been cleared of overgrown grass, plants and weeds. This work was extensive and was funded by the regeneration group. We’re grateful to the businesses at Cleeve Wood who continue to offer financial support which makes this work possible.
  • We are delighted to once again be sponsoring Downend & Bromley Heath In Bloom. Planters have been installed in the area and we thank those businesses at Cleeve Wood who help financially support the regeneration group which makes this possible.
  • New signage for parking has been installed on the land by the shops. Previous signage was vandalised and removed. The new signage informs visitors of the parking restrictions and that the area is covered by CCTV.
  • New directories / maps will be installed around the shops in the spring/summer to help visitors find a specific business or address in the area. The signage also contains information about CCTV as well as a link to an Google maps to view the area on mobile devices.
  • While COVID-19 continues to be a challenge for many businesses this may mean changes to opening hours or how appointments are handled. Please contact any of the businesses directly for their latest information.

2020

  • We want to wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas and New Years. We thank you for supporting our local businesses during what was a very unusual and challenging 2020.
  • Due to the ongoing situation regarding COVID-19 we continue to advise customers to contact businesses at Cleeve Wood Road shops directly with any enquiries regarding opening hours etc.
  • Unfortunately due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19 the organisers of Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road shops have made the difficult decision to cancel this years event scheduled for Sunday 29th November 2020.

  • Due to the coronavirus some of businesses within the rank of shops are closed or working with amended business hours. Please contact the businesses directly for their latest information.
  • We are delighted to confirm that the Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road shops 2019 event raised over £2000 for charity and we have presented each of our three chosen charities with a cheque for £825! We look forward to the 2020 event which is set for Sunday 29th November 2020.

2019

  • We are also looking for any used toys (in a saleable condition) that you would like to donate, we are also collecting the toys for our charity Christmas event. Please drop off any donations to Style Collection during their opening hours.

  • We are very pleased to confirm that the Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road shops event will be returning for 2019! More details can be found here or on the Facebook event page.
  • The clothes donation bin that was placed without permission on land by the rank of shops has now been removed. The bin was believed to be fraudulent for a number of reasons and was recently widely reported in the news. The clothes bin was removed early on Saturday morning by the same people who installed it. We appreciate the help we have received in dealing with this from the local community, parish council, police and others.
  • We do not advise using the clothes donation bin that has appeared in the parking area at Cleeve Wood Road Shops. Please see our Facebook post for more information.
  • Cleeve Wood Road Shops has been awarded a “Parish Champion Award” from Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council. Thank you to the Parish for their recognition.
  • The opening hours for Four Seasons takeaway have been updated.

2018

  • Beckspool Road, near to Cleeve Wood Road Shops, will begin drainage works on Monday 29th October 2018 for up to three months. This may impact the immediate area as roadworks will be in place. See the South Glos website for more information.
  • Temporary traffic lights will be installed at the bridge on Cleeve Wood Road, near to the shops, while essential works are carried out on the bridge from Monday 17 September for up to 4 weeks. See the South Glos Street Care page for more information.
  • A defibrillator has been installed by the side of Cleeve Wood Pharmacy.
  • We are pleased to have added Victoria’s Health and Beauty and Downend Bikes & Scooters to the business listing page.
  • Signage about the newly installed CCTV has been installed around the rank of shops as well as a number of “Map / Directory” guides.
  • Following enquiries, we re-confirm that the Christmas event will be taking a year off in 2018. See our Christmas page for more information.
  • CCTV has now been installed within the rank of shops at Cleeve Wood Road. These new cameras are in addition to the various cameras already installed by businesses. You can find more information about the CCTV here.
  • Victoria’s Health & Beauty is now under new ownership. Welcome to the new owners Lesley and Lillie.
  • Due to the installation of CCTV the lighting that was intended to be installed by summer 2018 has been slightly delayed and will aim to be installed by the end of the year.
  • New parking signs are going to be installed for the land opposite the rank of shops. This follows the original signs being vandalised and removed. The replacement signs have again been funded fully by the committee at Cleeve Wood Road shops. The installation of CCTV is intended to combat any further vandalism.
  • CCTV will be installed within the rank of shops in August 2018. The CCTV being installed has been funded by the businesses within the rank. The local Parish Council also offered donation towards the installation, providing a camera covers the soon-to-be-installed defibrillator.
  • New signage will be installed within the rank of shops detailing the CCTV, as per GDPR guidelines.
  • A defibrillator is intended to be installed by Cleeve Wood Pharmacy, this is being arranged with the local parish council.
  • As of the end of April 2018 the Bromley Heath Viaduct will be re-open. Although building work will continue, the bridge will now be re-open and traffic diversions will be removed. This will mean traffic should return to normal levels in the surrounding area.
  • Quotes are being obtained for installing CCTV within the rank of shops. This possible addition would be funded through monthly donations from the businesses within the rank.
  • Opening hours for Webbs Flowers have been updated on their business listing.
  • The Christmas event will be taking a year off in 2018 but something smaller will be planned for 2019. See our Christmas page for more information.
  • The grand total raised at our Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road shops event was £1850. Cheques were presented to our supported charities Jessie May Children’s Hospice and Heart Animal Rescue.

2017

  • Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas event at Cleeve Wood Road Shops. A fundraising grand total will be announced in the new year. The committee will be meeting in early 2018 to discuss how to proceed with future events. Please follow us on social media for updates.

  • The viaduct roadworks are well underway and usually flow quite quickly. Traffic is always heavy during peak travel times but outside of these times the roadworks have limited impact on the local area.
  • The Cleeve Wood Road shops committee will be meeting in late August to discuss on-going plans for the Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road 2017 event.

  • Congratulations to Cleeve Wood Pharmacy who were awarded a “‘Parish Champion Award” from Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council for their hard work and service to the area.
  • Debbie & Roger Webb from Webbs Flowers will be retired together in late April 2017. We wish them all the best. The flower shop will continue business as usual with longtime staff member Tracy taking ownership of the business.
  • The Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road shops 2017 charity event will be held on Sunday 26th November 2017 from 12pm until 4pm. It will be moving to a Sunday this year.
  • The upcoming roadworks on the nearby Bromley Heath viaduct may cause unplanned delays in the Downend area. Please allow extra time for your journey to Cleeve Wood Road Shops (especially during rush hour) as traffic will be heavier than normal during the roadworks.   • Charity cheque presentation will be done on Friday 24th March 2017. All three charities that our Christmas event supported will be in attendance to get a cheque for £300 each. The charities we supported at the 2016 Christmas event were Jessie May, St. Peter’s Hospice in Memory of Stephen Wood and Charlton Farm Trust. Photographs will be posted on social media following the event and local press will be contacted.
  • The charities supported by the Christmas 2016 event will be presented with their cheques in March 2017. Please see social media for details / further information.
  • The Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road shops raised £1427.64 (once costs of £494.46 were deducted). This amount will be split between the chosen charities and also with the Cleeve Wood Road Shops Regeneration Group to improve the area.
  • A new road sign has been installed by the local council at the end of the rank of shops.
  • The date for this years “Christmas At Cleeve Wood Shops” will likely be moving from a Saturday to a Sunday. This will be confirmed in due course.

2016

  • Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road 2016 will be weather dependent, meaning it will go ahead as planned if the weather is reasonable (due to it being an outside event). We recommend joining our Facebook event for the latest updates.
  • Christmas at Cleeve Wood Road 2015 raised £1351.30 despite the poor weather. The four charities that will benefit are:-. Bust, British Heart Foundation, Jessie May and the Deaf Children Society, who will each be given a cheque for £337.82.
  • Style Collection is undergoing a shopfront refit. They remain open as usual during any work.
  • One of the bins available for passers by has been damaged. The local council have confirmed they will replace it.
  • The date for this years “Christmas At Cleeve Wood Shops” has been confirmed for Saturday 26th November 2016.

  • New parking bay lines and signage will soon be put in place at the top of Cleeve Wood Road shops opposite Style Collection. The signs will confirm it is a 2 hour maximum parking and is for customers only. This has been confirmed by the council.
  • A new crossing has been installed outside of the shops by the local council, which makes entering the rank of shops from the middle easier.
  • Congratulations to Webbs Flowers who are Downend Voice’s Business of the Month (August 2015).
  • Hands-on Health Treatments is now part of THE Medical group. The shop has had some new signage installed to reflect this.

  • The front of Cleeve Wood Road Shops will be cleared by a ground works company on Thursday 30th April – Saturday 2nd May. There will be no parking available on the land during this time.   • Local shop owners at Cleeve Wood Road recently met with Avon & Somerset Police to discuss security and policing in the area. Some new measures will be put into action.

2014

  • We would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous 2015. Please contact individual businesses at Cleeve Wood Road shops for their opening times during the holiday period.
  • The gentlemans barber shop in Cleeve Wood Road shops has changed it’s name. The new name is “Georgi Barbershop” and they can be found on Facebook.
  • Saturday 6th December 2014 is “Small Business Saturday”. Please be sure to pay us a visit and support locally owned business.
  • Christmas at Cleeve Wood Shops: Saturday 29th November 2014. 12pm – 4pm. Live music, hog roast, raffle & more. Raising money for charity.
  • Webbs Flowers are asking for raffle prize donations to raise money for the Christmas at Cleeve Wood Shops charity event. Please drop off prizes at Webbs before Friday 28th November. Any and all prizes welcome – for children or adults.
  • We are hoping to clear the mud and grass at the front of the shops and replace it with gravel to allow much more parking. More information to follow.
  • The local council are looking into repairing the stone wall along the front of the shops as it’s starting to fall down. More information to follow.
  • The new community notice board has been installed by the pharmacy and it looks lovely. It contains a very useful map and history of the area. Thanks to the council for installing this.
  • Webbs Flowers and West 70 Photography will be hosting Halloween events for families from 3.30pm and 4pm respectively on October 31st 2014.
  • There will be a community clean-up project taking place at Cleeve Wood Road in late October. A skip will be used to clear the rubbish and tidy up the green space at the front of the shops. This will increase parking and also make the front of the shops more attractive.
